Having your keys with you for your vehicle is usually the first thing to do as it has a key role in starting your car. Although that’s how it should be, there are still moments where people forget their keys inside their vehicle. There are several ways to open a locked car, and it's important to understand your options so you know what to do if you find yourself in this situation.
In this blog post, our professionals from Diego’s Locksmith will explain how you can open a locked car’s door while the keys are inside.
The first thing to try if you find yourself locked out of your car with the keys inside is the tried and true method of using a spare key. If you have a spare key hidden somewhere on your car or a spare key fob, check those locations first. A spare key can usually be found on a magnetic key holder attached to the underside of your car or on a keychain in your purse or pocket. If you have a spare key located at home and have enough time to retrieve it, then that is the way to go.
Another option for opening a locked car is to use a slim jim. A slim jim is a long, thin piece of metal that can be inserted between the window and door frame to move the locking mechanism and unlock the car. While this method can be effective, it requires some level of skill and experience, so it's best to call in a professional locksmith who has the tools and know-how to use them safely and effectively.
If you don't have a spare key or a slim jim, another way to open a locked car is to use a coat hanger. This method involves using a coat hanger to manipulate the lock and open the car. To do this, straighten out a coat hanger and create a hook at one end. Then, insert the hooked end into the car through the weatherstripping around the door and use it to pull up on the lock to open the door. However, this method might not work on all vehicles as it does not have the specialized tools and it can cause damage to the door, so it's best to consult a professional locksmith.
If all else fails, you can also try using an auto lockout service. They can use specialized tools, such as an inflatable lockout tool or a lockout rod to open the door without causing damage to your car. And the best part is they are quick to arrive and will get you back in your car and on the road in no time.
It's important to note that while these methods can be effective in some situations, they may not work in every case. Each vehicle has its own unique locking mechanism, and attempting to open it yourself can lead to damage or make it more difficult for the professional locksmith to open it.
