When you own a car, you will probably notice that your key fob has buttons on it. These buttons are hardwired to send a signal to your vehicle. Based on the button you click, it will lock or unlock your car’s doors. It can also open the trunk and feature a panic mode too. These are all from a touch of a button, but there’s more to it than that.
Of course, it all comes from key fob programming and most importantly, the battery. The battery is what supplies the key with what it needs to start the process. Without it, the key wouldn’t function at all. For this reason, it is important to replace your battery when the time comes. The question is, when is it time to replace your car key battery?
In this blog post, our professionals from Diego’s Locksmith will go in depth about car keys and their batteries.
As time goes on, new cars and models come out frequently. This also means that new keys are introduced as well. All of the keys share something in common and that is a battery. With there being different models of cars and several types of car keys, a battery's longevity can vary. A type of car key that came with a battery was a transponder key. It was the first key with a battery and are the most commonly used keys today. The way they work is with a chip. This chip has a radio identification frequency specialization and it is the reason why you are able to start your car too. As you start your car from the ignition or unlock your car, your car key’s chip matches frequency with your vehicle in order to execute the process. Of course, this is all possible from the battery in your key.
There are different types of keys where you can find batteries in. These include key fobs, transponder keys, switchblade keys, and smart keys.
Depending on the type of car key you have, the average lifespan of a battery is about three to four years. When you use one, it is almost like you never have to replace the battery, but soon the day will come.
There are ways to notice if your battery is slowly losing its strength.
Firstly is if your signal range decreases. As the battery runs out, the signal strength also lessens.
Secondly is needing to click multiple times for the button to work. If the remote isn’t responding correctly to the command you are giving it, then that is a sign of a weak battery.
Thirdly is if you struggle locking and unlocking your vehicle. Sometimes with a weak battery, there could be a delay with doing those things.
